Floorboards Repairs
Split, rotten and loose floorboards replaced and secured in Cobham, with matched reclaimed timber.
Saving your original floorboards
Period floorboards have usually been lifted many times for pipes and cables, and few of those boards went back down neatly. We regularly find split boards, mismatched patches, rot from old leaks and boards held down with the wrong fixings. Our Cobham team repairs these problems properly, so the floor is sound and ready to restore.
Our floorboard repair work
Swapping damaged boards for reclaimed ones of the same width and thickness
Re-fixing loose boards to stop creaks and movement
Tidying old service cut-outs and short patched pieces
Checking and reinforcing joists where boards have sagged
Matching old boards
Imperial board sizes in older homes do not match modern timber. Reclaimed pine of the right size and age gives a repair that is almost impossible to spot after finishing. We then usually move on to a full floorboard restoration, sanding the floor back to fresh timber.
What about the gaps?
Wide gaps between boards let in draughts and collect dirt. We can close them with gap filling, using slivers or resin depending on the gap. Wooden floors expand and shrink through the year, so gap filling is excluded from our service guarantee - we will talk you through the options.
How we secure loose boards
Most movement comes from fixings that have lost their grip or joists that have dried out and moved. We re-fix boards with screws or ring-shank nails, counter-sunk and filled so they disappear after sanding. Where boards bounce, we check the joists underneath and add noggins or support where needed. The result is a floor that feels solid underfoot and stays quiet.
Before you lay a new finish
Repairs always come before sanding, because sanding loose boards leaves dips and ridges. A sound floor sands evenly and holds its finish for years. Planning a full restoration? Read our guide to restoring Victorian floorboards.

Questions about floorboards repairs
Why is gap filling not guaranteed?
Gap filling is excluded from our service guarantee. Wooden floors expand and shrink with the seasons and with movement in the building, which can open small cracks in the filler. We use the most suitable method for your floor to keep this to a minimum.
Can you match replacement boards to my floor?
We match the species, width and age of your boards wherever possible. After sanding and finishing the whole area, repairs are very hard to spot. Learn more about wood floor repairs.
How do you fill gaps between floorboards?
We fill narrow gaps with a resin and wood-dust mix that matches the boards. Wider gaps get thin pine slivers glued in and sanded flush. Our gap filling guide compares the two.
Can you restore boards that have been painted?
Yes — original boards often hide beautiful timber under old paint and varnish. We punch down nails, replace split boards and sand back to fresh timber. Read our guide to Victorian floorboards for what to expect.
Can I get a price without a visit?
Often, yes. Photos of the floor plus rough measurements let us give a guide price within a working day. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.
Can you fix squeaky floorboards?
Squeaks usually come from loose boards rubbing against nails or joists. We screw loose boards down into the joists and fix any movement in the joists below. Read about why floors squeak.
