Bringing damaged parquet back together

Parquet is one of the most durable floors there is, yet loose and hollow blocks are a very common problem. Damp, heating, past leaks and settlement all cause blocks to work loose, rattle underfoot or go missing altogether. In almost every case the floor can be saved.

What a parquet repair involves

  • Lifting loose and hollow blocks, cleaning off old adhesive and re-bonding them with a flexible modern adhesive

  • Replacing broken or missing blocks with reclaimed parquet of the same species and size

  • Rebuilding herringbone, chevron and basket-weave patterns, including borders

  • Levelling and repairing the subfloor where needed

Repairs that disappear

Parquet laid fifty or a hundred years ago has a colour that new timber cannot copy. We hold reclaimed stock and match each replacement block to its neighbours before fixing it. The final step is usually parquet sanding, which levels the floor and blends the repair completely.

When to call us

If blocks sound hollow, move underfoot or have started to lift, it is worth acting early. Loose blocks tend to loosen their neighbours, so early repairs keep costs down. Read our parquet restoration guide for more on what causes blocks to lift.

Why we reuse original parquet

Wherever we can, we lift loose blocks carefully, clean the old bitumen from the back and re-lay them in their original position. It keeps the floor authentic and means only truly broken blocks need replacing. Where a subfloor is damp or uneven, we deal with that first so the repair does not fail again.

Parquet patterns we work with

  • Herringbone and double herringbone

  • Chevron

  • Basket weave and brick pattern

  • Decorative borders and bands

Every repair is followed by a careful sand and your choice of oil or lacquer, so the floor finishes as one surface. All restoration work is covered by our three-month service guarantee.

FAQ

Questions about parquet floor repairs

All questions
Can I get a price without a visit?

Often, yes. Photos of the floor plus rough measurements let us give a guide price within a working day. We confirm it with a short visit before work starts, so the final quote is fixed.

How do you sand parquet without damaging it?

Parquet runs in several directions, so we sand it in stages at different angles. Finishing with a planetary or buffing machine removes swirl marks and leaves an even surface ready for oil or lacquer.

Can you repair a water-damaged floor?

Often, yes. Surface stains can usually be sanded out, while badly swollen or stained boards are replaced and blended in. The floor must be fully dry first, so we may check moisture levels before starting.

Can old parquet be saved?

Almost always. We re-glue loose blocks, replace missing ones with matched or reclaimed timber, then sand and finish the whole floor so the repairs disappear. Find out more about parquet floor repairs.

Do I need to empty the room?

Empty the room where possible and take down curtains that reach the floor. If you need help with heavy pieces, let us know when booking. Our preparation checklist has more tips.

What about the black adhesive under old parquet?

Black bitumen was a common adhesive for parquet laid before the 1970s. It is not a problem for sanding, but loose blocks need cleaning back and re-fixing with a compatible adhesive. We look at it at the survey and include it in the quote.
